I was quite old, 27, partly cause I never met anyone I really liked, and partly because sex was absolutely not talked about at home. I was one of the ones who tried to learn about sex from porn. In the end, I was so embarassed about it that I forced myself to sleep with a guy I'd just started dating. Broke up with him almost straight afterwards. It hurt a lot, mainly cause I was tense, and afterwards I felt really ashamed. Its taken a long time for me to admit that I like sex, and that its not a dirty thing .. that one experience nearly sent me back to the beginning again. Big mistake.”

I lost my virginity yesterday to my boyfriend, (I am 16 nearly 17 and he is 17 already.) We had talked about it for quite a while so we were complete comfortable with the situation when it came around. We tried the traditional him-on-top position but we had trouble getting it in so we resorted to the girl-on-top position. It did hurt a little but it wasnt unbearable, the pain lasted for a few minuites but then went off, but I didnt feel any pleasure at all, we were just having a regular chat while we were doing it. I was brought up a methodist! No talk about sex or rather it was regarded a dirty/sinful/not to be done/not to be enjoyed! The only talk we had a home was my mother saying "Don't you dare get pregnant!" I waited until I was married in my late twenties (as a good methodist should!) to have sex for the first time. We couldn't do it beacuse of all the negative messages I had been given. For the first 5 years of our marriage we went to counselling, Relate, sexual psychologists and psychologists - you name it we did it! It was very difficult as we didn't have the knowledge or language to understand along with total embarrassment! We have now been married for 15 years and have still not mastered it - I will certainly never get pregnant!
We felt really silly - how is it that 16 year olds can do it so easily and we can't - all to do with our upbringing - the therapists concluded that we must have been abused in childhood - they could find no other logical reason why we can't do it!
